Lessons from The Cay

After reading the book, The Cay, the fourth graders were asked to provide a lesson that they thought Theodore Taylor wanted them to learn from reading his book. This is a very simplistic start to understanding themes in literature. The students' responses range from somewhat basic to somewhat sophisticated, yet all of the students were able to learn something from the book. Read what the fourth graders thought was a main lesson in The Cay. The wording is that of the fourth graders.

Don't be racist

Don't be prejudice

Blacks are not mean

Always try your best

Treat everybody equally

Skin color doesn't matter

Always have faith in others

Don't think of war as a game

If you try hard, you will succeed

Being blind is not a great setback

Do not judge people from their color

Sometimes things don't go your way

Don't judge people by their skin color

Do not judge a person by their appearance

There is no reason to be racist of skin color

No matter how strong you are, everyone dies

Think of what you can do, not what you can't

Black people are no different than white people

If you're lost, don't give up trying to get rescued

Because you are blind doesn't mean you are disabled

Treat people equally and Blacks and do what whites can do

Do not be prejudice because it doesn't matter what color your skin is

You should never be mean to someone that is trying to keep you alive

During a war, travel by plane unless you want to be torpedoed on a ship

Never give up and keep trying, for whatever you do, just don't give up

Don't judge people by their color because they can be very nice and helpful

Black people are the same as white people, but they just have different skin

Black people aren't bad and you can live, work, and communicate with them

The color of someone's skin does not matter, only kindness in someone's heart

Black people aren't bad or horrible people, they are the same as everybody else

Don't face a hurricane because you will end up dying because the stuff in the hurricane will cut all over your body and you will be so hurt that you'll end up dying

Black and white people can live the same and be with each other. They are really the same on the inside, but they are just different on the outside because of the different cultures, skin colors and language that each group has.
